Cultural Humility: Laying a Foundation and Shifting the Narrative
Part 1: Laying a Foundation 9-24-20 10:00 am- 12:00 pm
Our individual lived experiences are instrumental in informing our beliefs, worldviews, and behaviors. Cultural Humility is required to effectively engage with others whose life experiences differ from our own. This workshop aims to provide insight into how survival is a universal human need that manifests in a multitude of ways. By recognizing how the traumatic stress of racism and other forms of oppression impact the brain and body, we are better able to identify the behaviors of ourselves and others through the lens of survival.
Participants will: Learn how the brain and body respond to stress and threat; Explore safety's relationship to risk and protective factors; Develop a safety plan to reduce risk and increase

Part 2: Cultural Humility in Action - Shifting the Narrative 9-25-20 10:00 am -12:00 pm
This workshop explains oppression through its Ideological, Institutional, Interpersonal, and Internalized natures. Through this lens, organizations and individuals can examine how their structure and services and beliefs and actions contribute to oppressive systems. Participants are then given the opportunity to explore practical steps to begin shifting beliefs and behaviors to those of safety.
Participants will: Learn the 4 I’s of Oppression; Examine dominant narratives and their impact on risk and prevention; Explore how to begin shifting spaces and programming from oppressive to safe
