Secret Life of Teens Series: Sexuality and the Adolescent Brain

This training is for those who engage with youth and seek to more fully understand the role of sexual expression in their lives. Often, adults take a “Just say NO” approach to sexual behavior without understanding the underlying drives behind a youth’s behavior. This training will look at how early childhood experiences, curiosity, and social messaging lay the foundation for relationship and sexual development.

Objectives:
1. Participants will increase their understand of how their own values and beliefs around sexuality may impact their work with youth.
2. Participants will gain understanding of how early neglect and sexual abuse may impact relationship development in later years.
3. Participants will be able to identify what makes up true consent around sexual activity.
4. Participants will increase their knowledge on how to identify when curiosity about sexual activity becomes problematic.

Trainer:
Colleen Mercuri-Johnson, MSW, LISW-S is the founder of Hope Tree Consulting LLC. She holds a Certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies from the Child Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute. An experienced trainer and mental health therapist, Colleen specializes in working with individuals with complex trauma histories, as well as consultation to teams and systems.

Zoom trainings will be recorded for record-keeping, quality assurance, and training purposes. Zoom meeting room discussions will not be recorded. We hope to reach a larger audience and share more knowledge from training by utilizing audio and/or video clips that we can share on social media apps and as follow-ups to training.
